Amazon consumer CEO steps down after 23 years

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Amazon has revealed that its chief executive officer (CEO) of worldwide consumer, Dave Clark, will step down from his role, effective 1 July 2022.

The company said Clark has decided to pursue other opportunities after 23 years in the role.

He joined Amazon’s Operations Pathways Programme in May 1999 to build and scale its Consumer Operations. Clark started as an operations manager in Kentucky, growing to a GM in the Northeast, and stepping up to lead WW Operations, and then eventually leading all of WW Consumer.

Amazon said Clark has led teams who have designed several generations of FCs, built out Amazon’s transportation network from scratch, and has developed “significant” talent throughout the organisation.

Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, said: “The past few years have been among the most challenging and unpredictable we’ve faced in the history of Amazon’s Consumer business, and I’m particularly appreciative of Dave’s leadership during that time.

“We’re trying to be thoughtful in our plans for Dave’s succession and any changes we make. I expect to be ready with an update for you over the next few weeks.”

Clark added: “As much as I have loved the ride, it is time for me to say goodbye to start a new journey. For some time, I have discussed my intent to transition out of Amazon with my family and others close to me, but I wanted to ensure the teams were set up for success. I feel confident that the time is now.

“I leave knowing that the leaders in the Consumer business are world class and will take the next phase of Amazon to remarkable levels of success. Thank you for letting me be a part of the Amazon story.”
