Co-op’s Matt Atkinson to step down

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The Co-op has announced that Matt Atkinson is stepping down from his role as chief customer and membership officer at the group.

Atkinson will leave the position at the end of June 2021, following a four year stint that saw him unify the business around the Co-op brand and position key assets in support of the group’s vision.

Under his stewardship, the firm’s data, digital, membership, and community platforms have undertaken significant transformations.

Atkinson also supported the creation of the group’s new insurance distribution business, exiting the Co-op health venture and re-organising the member and consumer function.

He said: “The past four years have seen the Co-op continue to grow and regain its purpose as a differentiated business that clearly creates value with values at its core.

“I’m proud of the contribution I’ve been able to make and I’m leaving behind some incredible memories and a fantastic team.”

Upon completion of the move, Ali Jones, customer and community director, and Charlotte Lock, data and loyalty director, will report to Steve Murrells, CEO.

Lock will be tasked with extra digital products responsibilities, while joining Shirine Khoury-Hag’s, CFO and life services CEO, leadership team.

Murrels said that Atkinson “played a major role in galvanising and re-positioning” the group which owes him “a huge debt of thanks for his co-operative approach and leadership”.
