Ebay announces support package for retail businesses

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Ebay has announced a three-year multi-million pound support package for retail businesses owned by disadvantaged communities in the UK.

The ‘Ebay for Change’ programme will set out to create jobs and opportunities in the retail sector, which has been hit hardest by the pandemic.

The new venture, in partnership with Social Enterprise UK, will be a hub on Ebay UK connecting its 29 million shoppers in the country with these small businesses each with a clear social mission.

Chris Gale, head of Social Impact of Ebay UK said: “While the pandemic hasn’t created the levels of inequality that we see in society, it has certainly exacerbated them both socially and economically.

“We want to be a part of changing that and building a fairer and ultimately more sustainable economy.”

He added: “We believe that business can be a force for positive change and social enterprises are the living and breathing example of how this can be achieved.

“With 300,000 small businesses successful trading on eBay UK we have proven technological expertise to bring millions of shoppers to these.”
