Casual Dining Group falls into administration

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The owner of Bella Italia and Café Rouge, Casual Dining Group, has fallen into administration.

According to a report by the
BBC, almost 1,900 of the group’s 6,000 strong workforce have been made redundant, with 91 sites closing their doors for good.

The BBC said AlixPartners, the appointed administrators, will seek offers on the remaining parts of the business.

It comes after a raft of jobs cuts across the high street, with Harveys falling into administration this week and John Lewis revealing plans to axe jobs and shutter stores.

Elsewhere, Harrods also cut 700 jobs this week in order to weather the storm caused by the coronavirus pandemic. According to The Guardian, Harrods told its staff that one in seven of its employees would be affected by jobs cut.
