‘Big 4’ grocer Tesco has announced plans to open pop-up convenience stores at NHS Nightingale sites across the UK, amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The NEC in Birmingham has been selected as Tesco’s first NHS Nightingale Hospital pop-up store, which is due to open later this week.
Discussions are also in place for the grocer to open pop-up sites at the Nightingale hospitals at London’s Excel centre, Manchester and Harrogate.
The news comes as, Tesco announced plans to provide a £30m package of support for local communities tackling Covid-19, including a £25m food donations programme.
The ‘Big Four’ grocer is currently donating £3m of food every month through its Community Food Connection scheme and distribution centres.
Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: “As part of our continued commitment to support and thank those in the NHS for all they are doing, we began work on Sunday on our first dedicated NHS Nightingale Hospital pop-up store, at the NEC in Birmingham.
“Following an idea from Public Health England, we will be providing NHS staff with on-site 24 hour access to the food and household products they need. Construction at the NEC started yesterday (Sunday) and we aim to be open by the end of next week.
