Keeping retail environments clean during busy trading periods

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

April marks one of the first major trading peaks of the retail calendar. Encouragingly, early indicators suggest consumer activity may be strengthening in 2026, with UK retail sales recording their largest monthly increase since May 2024. While economic pressures have not disappeared, forecasts point to modest growth across the sector as retailers approach the busy spring trading period.

While this surge presents a valuable commercial opportunity, it also puts greater strain on store environments that must remain clean and safe throughout the day. For facilities managers and procurement teams, increased footfall brings a familiar challenge: maintaining consistently high hygiene standards across busy public spaces as visitor numbers rise and shared facilities come under greater pressure.

In retail environments, hygiene is closely linked to visitor experience. Clean and well-maintained spaces protect brand reputation and help create an environment where people feel comfortable spending time – and spending money. When standards slip in areas such as washrooms, entrances or food courts, it can quickly affect how visitors perceive the wider retail environment.

Maintaining these standards during peak trading periods requires a structured and proactive approach to cleaning operations.

Higher footfall increases operational pressure

Busy trading periods increase the number of shared contact points across retail environments. Escalator handrails, lift buttons, payment terminals, seating areas and washrooms are used repeatedly throughout the day.

Cleaning teams must manage these spaces continuously while ensuring that public areas remain presentable and safe. Visible cleaning activity also plays an important role in reassuring visitors that hygiene standards are actively maintained.

Washrooms often present the greatest challenge. High usage throughout the day means facilities must be checked frequently to ensure they remain clean and fully stocked. A poorly maintained washroom can quickly undermine confidence in the wider environment and damage the overall shopping experience.

For facilities managers overseeing complex retail estates, achieving this level of consistency requires reliable products and trusted suppliers.

Supporting retail teams with the right systems

In high-traffic environments, cleaning products must be both effective and practical to use throughout long trading hours.

Products such as Jangro’s Premium Germicidal Cleaner Deodoriser are designed for environments where both hygiene and odour control are essential. The formulation disinfects all surfaces while neutralising unpleasant odours at the source, making it suitable for areas such as washrooms, entrances and communal spaces. Certified to EN1276 and EN14476 standards, it provides effective protection against bacteria and viruses while remaining economical due to its concentrated formulation.

Consistency in chemical dilution is equally important for large cleaning teams. Jangro’s EcoMulti  and EcoShot dosing systems allow operatives to dispense precise quantities of concentrated chemicals directly into bottles, sinks or buckets. This ensures accurate dilution, reduces product waste and supports safer handling while helping facilities teams maintain consistent cleaning standards across their estate.
