Ecommerce director departs Co-op after eight years

The business expanded its quick commerce reach to more than 1,000 stores during his tenure

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Ecommerce director Chris Conway has left Co-op after eight years with the convenience retailer overseeing the growth of the group’s digital delivery business.

Conway joined the Manchester-based mutual in 2016. He held several senior roles before becoming ecommerce director in 2021, where he managed partnerships with delivery platforms and the development of the retailer’s own online shop.

The business expanded its quick commerce reach to more than 1,000 stores during his tenure. Co-op now holds a significant share of the UK quick commerce market, competing with major supermarkets and dedicated delivery apps.

Conway confirmed his departure on Linkedin, stating he intended to take time to reflect before starting a new role. He thanked colleagues and partners for their support during his time at the business.

Co-op has not yet named a successor for the role. The retailer continues to target an increase in its online market share as part of its wider growth strategy.

Conway said: “It’s been a privilege to help shape the evolution of our online and quick commerce proposition. What began as an emerging idea grew into a business of real scale – built by talented teams willing to test, learn and move at pace.

“I’m proud of what we achieved together, particularly in pushing established retail into faster, more agile territory.”
