On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The Co-operative Group has announced that Ronny Gottschlich will join its board as an independent non-executive director.

Gottschlich brings “extensive” retail experience as having previously been the CEO of Lidl UK, a role he held for six years until 2016.

He was also the chief commercial officer (CCO) and co-founder of on-demand delivery company Gorillas.

He has also held many senior leadership roles for the Schwarz Group in multiple European markets, and in his advisory work as founder of Heunadel Retail Advisory.

Debbie White, chair of the Co-operative Group, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Ronny to our Board and to our Co-op. Ronny brings a wealth of experience and joins us at an important time for our Co-op as we look to grow our Co-op for the future, for the benefit of our 7 million members across the UK.”

Ronny Gottschlich added: “I’m excited to be joining the Co-op, a business with genuine purpose, and for the opportunity to work with the Board and Leadership team to deliver the next stage in the strategy for growth.”
