Trade retailer Screwfix has reached the milestone of opening 1,000 stores across its operations in the UK, Republic of Ireland and France.
The company opened its first physical outlet in Yeovil in 2005. Since then, the retailer has opened an average of one store per week for the last 10 years.
Expansion into the Republic of Ireland began in 2019, where the firm now operates more than 40 sites. It launched in France in 2022 and currently has 35 stores there.
The retailer recently introduced an ultra-compact format called Screwfix City. This provides trade customers with 3,000 products for immediate collection and 31,000 items available for the next day.
The business employs more than 14,000 staff. Its apprenticeship programme results in 84% of retail employees earning a promotion upon completion of the scheme.
The company stated its intention to eventually operate more than 1,000 stores across the UK and Ireland, with a further 600 sites planned for France.
Chief executive John Mewett said: “We’re delighted to have opened our 1,000th Screwfix store. Since our first opening in 2005, we’ve continued to provide the ultimate convenience for tradespeople and build on our success in the UK to expand into the Republic of Ireland and France. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all our Screwfix and Kingfisher colleagues who have been instrumental in achieving this amazing milestone.”
