John Lewis’ head of womenswear announces departure

On the final episode of season three we sit down with Claire Watkin, CEO of The Fine Bedding Company, a fourth-generation business founded in 1912. She shares how the brand has performed in recent years and what its proposition really stands for today. We explore balancing heritage with innovation, building sustainability into products and operations, and the journey to a zero-waste eco-factory in Estonia. Claire also unpacks earning consumer trust, making the investment case, and her advice to the next generation of leaders.

John Lewis’ head of women’s brands and own-label, Claire Miles, has announced she is stepping down from the business after more than three years in the role.

Miles joined the department store group in June 2022, taking responsibility for the development and performance of its womenswear brands and own-label offer during a period of wider transformation at the retailer.

Before joining John Lewis, she served as head of buying and development at fashion retailer Mint Velvet between June 2020 and February 2022. She had previously held an interim role as head of buying for womenswear brands at Asos from 2013 to 2014.

Earlier in her career, Miles worked at New Look from 2004 to 2010 in a range of buying roles, most recently as senior buyer for outerwear and tailoring.

In a LinkedIn post, Miles said: “After three and a half years, I am saying goodbye to John Lewis. This has been a deeply rewarding chapter. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me to be part of the transformation journey, the breadth of opportunity, and the chance to work alongside exceptional colleagues who care deeply about quality, customers, and each other.

“John Lewis is an organisation defined by its values, and leading and contributing within that environment has shaped how I think about people, performance, and long-term impact.”

She added: “I leave with enormous respect for the talent across the business and appreciation for those who supported and collaborated with me along the way to achieve great things.”
