Lidl GB has recorded its ever biggest Christmas trading period, with sales rising 10% year- on-year in the four weeks to Christmas Eve, as more households shopped with the discounter.The retailer reported turnover of more than £1.1bn over the period, with Monday 22 December marking the busiest day for sales. Shopper numbers increased by 8% compared with last year, with nearly 51 million customer visits recorded across its stores.

Footfall peaked on Tuesday 23 December, according to the company, as shoppers made last-minute purchases ahead of Christmas Day.

Lidl said it continued to focus on price competition over the festive period, including maintaining its “We Won’t Be Beaten on Price” pledge and offering a Christmas meal for eight priced at £1.24 per person. The company said it invested £300m during 2025 to keep prices down.

British-sourced products performed strongly, with items such as Valley Spire cheese truckles and Deluxe hand-cooked crisps among the best sellers. Demand for British vegetables also increased, with shoppers buying more than 11,000 tonnes of seasonal produce in the week before Christmas Eve, a rise of 70% year on year. Sales of clementines were up by almost 40%.

The retailer said customers began festive shopping earlier than in previous years, with more than 30 million mince pies sold from September onwards. Non-food items also performed strongly, including decorations and gifts sold through the Middle of Lidl range, where sales of wooden toys rose by almost a quarter compared with last year.

Digital loyalty scheme Lidl Plus contributed to the Christmas performance, with the retailer reporting a 28% increase in active users in November and a 43% rise in voucher redemptions compared with the previous year. Redemptions linked to its Advent Calendar promotion increased more than fourfold in December.

The retailer also reported strong demand across its Deluxe own-brand range, including party food and desserts, while pistachio-based products were among the most popular flavours over the festive period.
