Marks and Spencer’s chief digital and technology officer, Rachel Higham, has reportedly stepped down from the role less than 18 months after joining from BT, according to Sky News

News of Higham’s departure comes after an internal memo to staff, which was circulated yesterday (12 September) said she was “stepping back from her role”.

The company added: “Rachel has been a steady hand and calm head at an extraordinary time for the business, and we wish her well for the future.”

Her exit follows the cyber attack in April by a group known as Scattered Spider, which disrupted M&S’s systems and temporarily halted its online operations. The incident was estimated to have cost the business about £300m.

The retailer has since restored its click-and-collect service and said last month it expects part of the costs to be covered by insurance.

M&S told Sky News in August that it was not seeking to replace Higham. It remains unclear who will succeed her or whether she will receive a payoff.

M&S has been approached for comment.
