Aldi unveils bigger than expected pay rise for staff
It comes as Aldi is set to upgrade more than 20 of its UK stores before the end of the year, including two major extensions in Cumbria and Wales

Aldi has announced it will lift hourly pay for over 28,000 UK store employees beyond its previously announced increase, “reinforcing its commitment to never be beaten on pay”.
From 1 September, the rate for store assistants will move from £12.75 to £13.02 an hour (rising to £13.95 with service), while London colleagues will see rates climb to £14.35 an hour, reaching £14.66 with service.
This marks Aldi’s second pay rise of 2024. Aldi also offers paid breaks which are worth around £1,425 annually to the average store colleague.
CEO Giles Hurley said: “Our colleagues are at the heart of our success, and we’re committed to ensuring they are fully rewarded. This higher-than-planned increase is part of our promise to never be beaten on pay.”
It comes as Aldi is set to upgrade more than 20 of its UK stores before the end of the year, including two major extensions in Cumbria and Wales.
Its stores in Barrow-in-Furness and Ebbw Vale will undergo full-scale extensions between now and December, while a further 21 sites will receive internal improvements such as new layouts, updated fixtures and sustainability upgrades.
The works are part of Aldi’s ongoing store enhancement programme, which has already modernised more than 500 branches with changes including wider aisles and expanded space for fresh produce.
