Walpole names Fortnum and Mason CEO as new chair

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Walpole has announced the appointment of Tom Athron, chief executive of Fortnum and Mason, as the new chair of the UK luxury sector’s trade body.

Starting today (1 July), he succeeds Michael Ward, managing director of Harrods, who steps down after a nine-year term as chair. Ward has now become president emeritus in an advisory capacity.

Ward also serves as president of the European Creative and Cultural Industries Alliance (ECCIA) until January 2026, when Walpole’s current presidency ends.

Athron has led Fortnum and Mason since December 2020, having previously been chief operating officer at Matchesfashion and held senior roles over 13 years at the John Lewis Partnership, including a position on its main board and the founding of JLP Ventures, its innovation unit.

Athron said: “It is a privilege to take on the role of chair at Walpole. I look forward to working closely with chief executive Helen Brocklebank, the board, and our members to continue advancing Walpole’s mission to promote, protect, and develop the British luxury sector, both in the UK and internationally.

“On behalf of the board and our members, I would like to thank Michael for his outstanding contribution to the organisation and for the passion and energy he has brought to everything Walpole does.”

Ward added: “Over what has been an exceptionally turbulent nine years for business, I am incredibly proud of the role Walpole has played in shaping public perceptions of British luxury and in championing the sector.

“Thanks to this work, our industry is now well positioned for continued recognition and growth.”
