Aldi increases staff pay to highest hourly rate for supermarket workers

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Aldi has announced its store assistants are set to receive a pay rise with hourly rates increasing to at least £12.71, maintaining its position as “Britain’s best paying supermarket”.

The new minimum rate, which increases to £14.00 within the M25, exceeds the Real Living Wage set by the Living Wage Foundation in October last year and will take effect from Saturday 1 March.

Store assistant pay will rise further to £13.62 nationally, and £14.23 within the M25, based on the length of service.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our colleagues are the best in the business and this latest pay rise reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring they remain the best paid.

“Every single Aldi colleague plays an absolutely vital role in delivering on our promise to bring unbeatable Aldi prices to even more customers across the UK.”

The news follows Aldi’s confirmation of plans to open nine stores in the capital this year as the grocer aims to invest £650m in Britain in 2025. Shoppers in Wimbledon, Fulham Broadway, Caterham and Orpington are all set to benefit from a new Aldi store in 2025 as part of a £55m investment within the M25

Aldi has a long-term ambition to open another 100 stores in London, creating around 3,500 new jobs.
