Tesco hires Deliveroo’s head of strategy to lead Whoosh

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Tesco has hired Deliveroo’s global head of strategy Francesca Jones to lead its Whoosh delivery service.

Jones joined Deliveroo in 2022 first as a global training and operational excellence manager before being promoted to head of strategy in 2023. Prior to that, she worked at Aldi as an area manager for six years.

In an official announcement on LinkedIn, Jones said: “I am thrilled to announce that I have joined Tesco as the Head of Whoosh! A huge thank you to the Tesco team for the warm welcome during my first few weeks – just in time for a record-breaking Tesco Christmas.

“I am incredibly excited about the opportunities ahead and the talented team I will be working with.”

Tesco initially launched Whoosh in 2021 from a single store in Wolverhampton before rolling out the delivery service to 32 large stores and over 1,400 express stores.

Her appointment comes as the supermarket has recently seen its “biggest ever” Christmas with like-for-like sales rising 2.8%. Online sales rose 10.8% over the festive period driven by 1.2 million customers placing orders on Whoosh.
