Aldi to invest over £40m in Scotland over next two years

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Aldi is set to invest over £40m into its Scottish store estate over the next two years, with three new sites set to open in 2025.Arbroath, Baillieston and Kirkintilloch stores are set to open next year, while its Carluke, Glenrothes and Stirling stores will undergo a refurbishment.

The company said the investment supports its growth ambitions for Scotland and enables it to keep up with growing consumer demand, having welcomed 58 million customers in Scotland over the year.

In 2025, Aldi will also launch a recruitment drive for over 100 new logistics team members to work at its Bathgate Regional Distribution Centre.

Regional managing director for Aldi Scotland Sandy Mitchell said: “As we look ahead to 2025, we remain committed to reaching more customers than ever before, with the opening of more stores and increased investment in Scotland.

“This move is a testament to our belief in Scotland’s vibrant economy and the exceptional quality of its suppliers. We remain committed to championing Scotland, creating local jobs, and strengthening our relationships with local partners as we continue to expand and enhance our offering.”

Earlier this month, Aldi reported it would be investing around £650m across the UK in 2025 as part of the group’s ongoing expansion plans.

This includes the development of new stores in Fulham Broadway in London, Billericay in Essex, and Cheadle in Stoke-on-Trent, with the supermarket targeting around 30 new store openings next year.

The move forms part of Aldi’s package of annual investment to accelerate its expansion across Britain.
