On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Asda has announced the appointment of Barney Burgess as vice president of online on an interim basis until David Devany joins the business next year.

Barney brings over 25 years’ broad expertise across retail, consumer and financial services sectors, both in the UK and internationally.

This includes five years running Tesco’s grocery home shopping business, during which time the retailer launched its Click and Collect service for grocery orders in the UK.

He also brings consulting experience from McKinsey, where he advised online grocery businesses on their operational strategies.

Barney will lead the Asda.com, George.com and online operations teams with immediate effect, reporting into Matt Kelleher, Asda’s chief digital officer.

Earlier this year, Asda announced that David Devany would be joining from Iceland in 2025 as its permanent vice president of ecommerce.
