In this episode we speak to Matt Dalton, consumer sector leader at Forvis Mazars. Matt discussed the biggest challenges facing the retail sector, from cost pressures and wage increases to polarised property markets and geopolitical shocks, and the ways in which retailers can best navigate these. Asda has announced the appointment of Barney Burgess as vice president of online on an interim basis until David Devany joins the business next year.

Barney brings over 25 years’ broad expertise across retail, consumer and financial services sectors, both in the UK and internationally.

This includes five years running Tesco’s grocery home shopping business, during which time the retailer launched its Click and Collect service for grocery orders in the UK.

He also brings consulting experience from McKinsey, where he advised online grocery businesses on their operational strategies.

Barney will lead the Asda.com, George.com and online operations teams with immediate effect, reporting into Matt Kelleher, Asda’s chief digital officer.

Earlier this year, Asda announced that David Devany would be joining from Iceland in 2025 as its permanent vice president of ecommerce.
