On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Women’s clothing brand Hobbs is set to launch new stores in more favourable locations despite a string of closures, according to the Times.

The group, which closed its London’s Bloomsbury, Victoria and Islington stores in recent weeks, will open in seven new locations confirmed for this year, including in Canary Wharf in east London, Watford in Hertfordshire and Trafford in Manchester.

Hobbs has also announced the opening of its international stores in Hong Kong, Cork in Ireland, Hamburg in Germany and Westchester in New York State, bringing its total number of stores to about 80.

Hobbs told the Times that its store strategy “aims to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers through an improved distribution of stores, not only in the capital but the wider nation, too”.

The news comes after Hobbs owner TFG London reported pre-tax profits of £6.2m for the year to March 25, 2023, up from £2.97m the year before. Its sales also jumped 8.9% to £377.7m.
