M&S to freeze price of school uniforms

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

M&S has announced that it will be freezing the price of its school uniforms for a third of the year, as part of the retailer’s commitment to protecting value on the products that “matter the most” to customers.

The announcement comes as, according to the retailer’s latest Family Matters index, the cost-of-living remains a concern for 81% of families, with 62% of customers prioritising value when shopping.

M&S school uniforms also reportedly rank number one among consumers for value for money. Holding the price on school uniforms means they will remain the same price as in 2021.

In addition, the retailer will be offering an extra 20% off school uniform for early bird shoppers for a limited time only. Prices in the ‘Back to School’ range will start from £7 for a multipack of three 100% responsibly sourced cotton unisex polo shirts, but with the discount, they will start from just £5.60.

Alexandra Dimitriu, kidswear director at M&S, said: “School uniforms are an essential purchase for millions of families. Now more than ever parents are prioritising value when it comes to making purchasing decisions.

“We believe that a great price shouldn’t come at the expense of great quality and by continuing to protect prices, we’re ensuring affordable school uniforms – that also pass the hand-me-down test – are accessible to all families this Back to School season.”
