The Body Shop CEO steps down after five years

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The Body Shop chief executive David Boynton has recently announced he will step down after working with the company for five and a half years.

Prior to joining the company in 2017, Boynton was chief executive at Charles Tyrwhitt and held senior roles at L’Occitane and Superdrug’s parent company, A.S Watson.

In a LinkedIn statement, Boynton said: “It has been a thrilling ride leading this incredible company – navigating the many storms of recent years, but also ensuring it is closer to the vision of its founder Dame Anita Roddick than it has been for many years – reimagined for new times and new generations.

“I’m leaving with real confidence in the future of The Body Shop – there are strong foundations, a clear, compelling plan and the talent to deliver that plan.”

Meanwhile The Body Shop has announced that Ian Martin Bickley will become interim CEO of the company and work with the executive team to refine the current business plan as well as finding a permanent successor.

Bickley, who has previously worked with Coach and Crocs, is already familiar with the company, having previously served on Natura&Co’s board committee dedicated to The Body Shop as well as acting as an advisor.

In a statement, the company said: “We would like to thank David Boynton for his leadership and strong contribution since he joined the group. He led the brand and business transformation following the acquisition of The Body Shop from L’Oréal.”
