Sainsbury’s to hire 18,000 seasonal workers

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Sainsbury’s is hiring for 18,000 additional roles over the Christmas period to help meet extra demand over the peak season, with 15,000 roles created at Sainsbury’s, 2,000 roles at Argos and 1,000 in logistics.

The temporary workers will help to serve customers, keep shelves stocked and pick, pack and deliver online orders, while logistics colleagues will work in warehouses to help ensure product arrives at stores across the country.

Sainsbury’s said it is committed to offering “leading rates” of pay, and in September announced a second pay rise and a total yearly investment of £150m. Joining existing colleagues, Sainsbury’s and Argos temporary Christmas store workers will receive a higher pay of £10.25 and £11.30 in London

Seasonal workers will also benefit from a colleague discount card and free food during shifts for the first time, according to the group.

Angie Risley, group HR director at Sainsbury’s, said: “We are really excited to be able to welcome an additional 18,000 colleagues to our team to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our customers this Christmas.

“It is a special time of year but it’s also busy, and with more customers returning to do more of their shopping in-store, this investment in service will ensure customers can find whatever they need to celebrate this year easily and conveniently.”

She added: “We know how tough it is for households right now and as well as excellent value for customers we are committed to leading colleague pay. Our new higher base rate, colleague discount and free food during shifts ensures colleagues will be well-rewarded for their hard work.”

Temporary colleagues will work up until 7 January 2023 on fixed term contracts of between three and 12 weeks.
