Asda launches meal deal to help over-60s this winter

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Asda has announced its new ‘winter warmers’ meal deal, targeted at helping older customers struggling with spiralling cost of living prices.

The supermarket is offering customers aged 60 and over the chance to purchase soup, a roll and unlimited brews for just £1 in any of its 205 cafes all day and every day throughout November and December.

The supermarket’s latest Income Tracker showed that average disposable income for households aged 65 to 74 fell by 16.4% year-on-year in September, compared to a 14.6% decline in average disposable income for other households.

Mohsin Issa, Asda’s co-owner, said: “We know that this winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and a fixed income.

“We’ve already been able to serve over half a million meals through our Kids Eat for £1 initiative in our cafes and we’re hoping our new offer of soup and hot drinks for over 60s will prove just as impactful for those who need it most.”
