On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Online running shoes, running clothing and outdoor gear retailer SportsShoes.com has hired a former chief technology officer (CTO) of online fashion retailer In The Style.

Jon Cleaver has joined the £92m turnover business as CTO to continually enhance SportsShoes.com’s online customer and athlete experience.

He has also previously held CTO positions at furniture retailer Sofology and, most recently, European sneaker and streetwear marketplace KLEKT.

Established in 1982, SportsShoes.com offers more than 17,000 products from 150 global running and outdoor brands. From a running perspective these include Asics, Nike, Adidas, Hoka and New Balance whilst in terms of outdoor they include Haglöfs, Mammut, Rab and Patagonia.

In addition, it said Cleaver will deliver activity to retain and grow repeat business from the new customers that the business secured over the course of the pandemic when people turned to outdoor activity to keep fit.

Cleaver said: “As an active athlete, and someone who has bought products from SportsShoes.com dozens of times, I have an insight into the wants and needs of our customers.

“I am working with the company’s highly talented team of inhouse developers and marketers to not just make our website best-in-class, but to also grow our customer and athlete communities.”

He added: “SportsShoes.com is a business with a clear purpose-led vision. The company is as ambitious as it is innovative, and I look forward to playing my role in its continued success and evolution.”

Last November, the company appointed former CEO of Asics EMEA, Alistair Cameron, as non-executive director to help drive further national and international growth.
