WH Smith suspends Funky Pigeon sales after cyber security hit

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

WH Smith has confirmed its subsidiary, Funky Pigeon, has been hit by a cyber security incident that affected part of its systems on 14 April 2022.

The group has now temporarily suspended orders from the card and gift retailer and is investigating the incident with external IT specialists, adding that it takes the security of customer data “extremely seriously”.

It said that no customer payment data, such as bank account or credit card details, has been placed at risk, as this data is processed “securely” through accredited third-parties and is securely encrypted.

WH Smith said: “We are currently investigating the extent to which any personal data, specifically names, addresses, e-mail addresses and personalised card and gift designs has been accessed.”

It added that based on the current analysis of the situation, the incident is not set to have a material impact on its financial position, noting that its upcoming half-year results are “comfortably in line” with compiled consensus.
