Poundland to open biggest ever UK site

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Poundland is set to open its biggest ever UK store in Nottingham this week, which will offer its widest range of products yet.

The new Nottingham Riverside retail park site will open on 12 February. It stands at 15,000 square feet, making it the largest Poundland store to be opened, and over twice the size of a standard 6,000 sq ft Poundland store.

The new store is set to employ 75 full and part-time staff, making them the largest team for the chain in the UK.

Poundland said that more than a third of the new space will be dedicated to PEP&CO, allowing it to offer the biggest range from the clothing brand. As well as womenswear, menswear and kidswear, the PEP&CO Home department will include new 2022 ranges including new kitchen storage options, faux plants, bathroom accessories and soft furnishings.

The Nottingham Riverside site will feature extra wide aisles, as well as trolleys and belted checkouts. The PEP&CO ‘shop-in-shop’ will also have changing rooms for customer use. It will also use lightboxes, digital signage, mannequins and clean vistas.

It will also be the first Poundland to offer a range of small domestic appliances, and customers will be able to choose from a broad selection of items from Russell Hobbs, such as toasters, kettles and irons.

As well as food and drink, home and pet, entertainment, stationery and toys, it will feature a wider range of health and beauty products and will have a dedicated Rimmel cosmetics display.

Meanwhile, there will also be a food ‘to-go’ area at the front, takeaway coffee from a Costa Express self-serve bar, and snacks and pastries from Poundbakery.

Nottingham Riverside will also join the growing number of stores to offer chilled and frozen food, and will also have a fresh produce section and a selection of beers, wines and spirits.

Barry Williams, Poundland managing director, said: “Nottingham Riverside sets a new standard for Poundland. It’s our biggest and best store yet and it means we can offer a wider range than ever before, from longstanding Poundland favourites to new items that our customers are going to love.

“Our colleagues have worked flat out to get this superb store ready. But the story doesn’t stop here, because we’re already working on a new store at Teesside Park in the north east.”
