Tesco wins Terra Carta Seal award

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Tesco has announced it has been recognised by HRH The Prince of Wales for “leading the retail industry in transitioning towards a net zero future” by winning the Terra Carta Seal award.

The award, launched this year, is given to companies which are “driving innovation and taking action to create lasting sustainable change”.

Tesco said its plan for climate action focuses on the “areas where it can make the biggest difference: energy, transport, food production, diets and waste”.

Ahead of the ongoing UN global climate summit, COP26, Tesco recently announced two new targets; committing the business to achieve net zero emissions in its own operations across the Group by 2035, and across its total value chain by 2050, in line with the UN’s aspiration of keeping global warming below 1.5C.

The Prince of Wales, said: “The Terra Carta Seal recognises those organisations which have made a serious commitment to a future that is much more sustainable, and puts Nature, People and the Planet at the heart of the economy.

“We all need to make changes if we are to preserve the planet for our children and grandchildren and these businesses have pledged to make it easier for us all to do so.”

Tesco Group CEO, Ken Murphy said: “Making food production more sustainable is one of the biggest levers we can pull in the fight against climate change.

“It is why Tesco is working hard to create a better basket for our customers and the planet by driving improvements in our own operations, in our supply chain, and in our customers’ homes. We’ve made a good start, but we must all continue to challenge ourselves to be more ambitious to accelerate progress.”

He added: “Transformational change will require collective action, which is why we’re delighted that His Royal Highness is bringing together a diverse range of organisations committed to creating a climate and nature-positive future.

“We’re honoured to have received the Terra Carta Seal and will continue to collaborate across the food system to tackle the most pressing issue of our time.”
