Sainsbury’s Argos CEO to exit

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

The CEO of Sainsbury’s Argos, John Rogers, has announced he is leaving the business to become the CFO of advertising and public relations company WPP.

Rogers will leave the business on 31 October 2019 with Argos’s retail and logistics teams reporting to Simon Roberts, its retail and operations director. Argos’s commercial team will report to commercial director Paul Mills-Hicks.

Mike Coupe, chief executive officer, said: “John has worked alongside me for over 14 years and has made an outstanding contribution to the business. He leaves Sainsbury’s with our best wishes for the future.”

Rogers added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Sainsbury’s over the last 14 years and, in particular, the last three years as CEO of Sainsbury’s Argos.

“The opportunity to work with WPP, however, was too good to miss and I look forward to being a part of WPP’s leadership team as it embarks on its new strategy for growth.”
