Poundland to begin refurbishing 11 former Wilko stores

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Poundland has announced it will begin a major makeover of 11 former Wilko stores in the next few weeks, after acquiring Wilko stores in the administration process.

The first former Wilko stores to be refurbished will be located in Leigh, Peterlee and Ammanford, with the work due to be completed by 27 January.

By 5 February, makeovers will also be completed in former Wilko stores in Worcester, Leicester, Greenock, Stevenage, Chepstow, Thornaby, Hull, and Bicester.

As part of the transformation, the stores will also get fresh new signage, while staff areas will also receive makeovers to “make them the best places to work”.

While the work undertaken will vary from store-to-store, Poundland said each store will be “the best and most up-to-date” once finished.

Each refurbished store will offer customers a comprehensive range, including chilled and frozen food, and the very latest clothing and homewares ranges from Poundland’s parent company Pepco. All 11 former Wilko stores will also be reconfigured to offer more baby and kids clothing.

Darren Kay, retail director at Poundland, said: “Customers have reacted positively to the re-opening of these former Wilko stores as Poundlands in 2023, but as we said at the time, each was only beginning their Poundland journeys.

“Through this new investment, we’ll give each of these stores a top-to-bottom makeover to make them the best Poundland stores they can be.”

He added: ”I’d like to thank customers for bearing with us as we make changes in these stores and we can’t wait to re-launch them over the next few weeks.”
