House of Fraser to close two more stores

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

House of Fraser is set to close two more of its stores as parent company Frasers Group continues to prioritise Sports Direct and Flannels.

The House of Fraser store in Solihull will close on 28 August and its store in Guildford will shut on 30 September.

Frasers Group shut eight House of Fraser stores in the year to 30 April leaving its total number of UK stores at 31.

The brand has been cutting the number of bricks and mortar stores it has ever since it was rescued out of administration by Mike Ashley’s group in August 2018.

Chief executive of Frasers Michael Murray said last month that House of Fraser’s portfolio was “continually under review” and that some outlets were still “too big”.

A spokeswoman for Frasers Group said: “It is with regret that we announce House of Fraser Solihull and Guildford are planned to close in the coming months. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for their hard work and dedication. Where possible, we are committed to finding new roles within the group for all staff.”
