New Look axes further head office roles

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Four department head roles have reportedly been made redundant at New Look, a month after reports first emerged that 70 head office roles were at risk, according to Drapers

Senior e-commerce trade manager Michelle Dobson, head of accessories, beauty and lifestyle buying Faye Walton, head of IT delivery Pete Mead and head of kidswear merchandising Cara Gourlay have reportedly left the group.

New Look has declined to comment on the latest media reports.

Last month, the group revealed that 70 jobs could be at risk across its London and Weymouth head offices following a restructure of the group.

According to the group, the move is part of a wider review of its operating model and structure, and could impact several departments across both offices.

In a statement, the retailer said that those affected by the redundancies will enter a consultation period, and supporting affected staff will be a “priority”.

At the time, a spokesperson for New Look told Retail Sector: “New Look has changed significantly in recent years, having accelerated our ecommerce-business and reduced our store estate. As such, we have reviewed our operating model and structures, and we are making certain changes to our ways of working, to better reflect and support the growth of our omnichannel business.

“As part of this, we are proposing changes to our team structures, which regrettably, we expect to impact some roles at our Weymouth and London support centres. We will shortly be entering a consultation period with affected colleagues and our priority is to support them during this time.”
