Frasers to open third Sports Direct flagship in Manchester

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Frasers Group is opening a third Sports Direct flagship store in Manchester’s Arndale Centre on 24 March.

Set across five floors, the store will comprise sport, leisure, e-sports and fashion clothing across 50,000 sq ft. This will be the retailer’s most elevated concept store yet.

Some dedicated interactive areas will also take place inside, including a training experience, a golf putting challenge, a basketball experience and a PlayStation zone.

The store showcases a strong emphasis on digital integration, utilising the development of digital signage, maps and a bespoke app to help customers navigate the store.

Each floor includes a 3D digital map at a key landing point where customers can scan a QR code to access the map on their device, and a search function to direct them to the appropriate floor according to their needs. It will also guide them to key services and experiences available to them within core departments.

The digital strategy, all UI, UX and motion content has been designed and developed by The One Off, with hardware supplied and implemented by Inurface Media. The One Off worked with local artists to create a celebration of sport and local culture through curated art pieces, which have been applied in key branded areas.
