Amazon plans to abandon Gloucester distribution centre

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Amazon has revealed its plan to abandon its Gloucester Centre Severn distribution centre, which the company noted had never been “fully” operational.

According to the online retailer, the centre is due to close as the group looks to evaluate its distribution network, with plans for the vacant Gloucester site to be sub-let.

This is the latest announcement concerning closures for the company, as Amazon has also recently revealed planned closures for three other distribution centres in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster and Gourock, which will put approximately 1,200 jobs at risk.

As a result, warehouse workers at the retailer’s Coventry warehouse have organised another strike for later this month in a bid to improve working conditions and to secure a wage increase.

An Amazon spokesperson said: “We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees and customers. As part of this, the vacant site in Gloucester will be sub-let.”
