Gorillas enters discussion for international expansion

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Gorillas, the on-demand delivery company, has entered into an exclusive discussion to acquire the French delivery firm Frichti, to allow for “immediate” access to curated, fresh and local products.

Founded in 2015, Frichti has become a “national leader” in instant food and grocery delivery in France. It delivers fresh groceries, private label products and ready-to-eat meals to over 450,000 customers in eight cities in France and Belgium.

Frichti is reportedly one of the first companies in the “young industry” to have reached profitable operations.

Gorillas said Frichti’s expertise in building a sustainable operational network, as well as its “strong” technological infrastructure, will “complement” Gorillas’ activities across all of its international markets.

After opening 22 stores in key cities in France in less than a year, Gorillas will be able to “broaden” its local footprint and density. Currently, Gorillas operates in the UK, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Kagan Sümer, founder and CEO of Gorillas, said: “Frichti is an inspirational brand with incredible talents and values. What Julia, Quentin and the Frichti team have created in France is exceptional.

“We are super energised from our discussions and alignment on what we want to build together. It’s thrilling that we are committed to provide consumers immediate access to their essential needs. I am looking forward to our partnership with Frichti and to welcoming them to the Gorillas family.”

Julia Bijaoui, co-founder and co-CEO of Frichti, added: “With Gorillas we have found the perfect partner to take the next step of global expansion. We both share common values, culture, and most importantly, we have a similar vision for the consumer. I could not think of a better fit, and I am excited for our path ahead as one joint company.”

Quentin Vacher, co-founder and co-CEO of Frichti, said: “I believe we are building the next model of commerce that might prove to be the century’s biggest revolution in how we shop for groceries and I’m glad we can do it with the best partner and teams.”
