On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Pret A Manger is reportedly planning to open up to 100 new shops across the UK, in a move that is set to create around 2,000 new jobs.

According to the Sunday Times, the chain is set to open up the new sites with the help of its franchisees.

The paper reported that the group is now in talks with possible partners to explore expanding outside of London, including in drive-thru shops and on high streets.

It has reportedly divided the UK into regions as part of the plans, choosing a franchise partner in each area.

It comes as the chain is said to be mulling the opening of 100 of its own shops over the next three years.

The news comes almost one year after the chain confirmed it was to cut 2,800 high street jobs as part of a restructuring following almost two months of consultations with team members.

At the time, the high street chain said that although sales and footfall started to show “clear signs of recovery”, sales stood at where they were around 10 years ago, when the business was “considerably smaller”.
