Asda chief Roger Burnley completes early resignation

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Asda has announced that Roger Burnley has stepped down from his role as chief executive at the group following its £6.8bn EG Group and TDR Capital takeover.

While Burnley had been due to leave his post in 2022, the process has been accelerated “following completion of a transition period” under the group’s new ownership.

In turn, Asda revealed that the search for Burnley’s replacement is ongoing, with the supermarket chain’s shareholders set to make a further announcement regarding his long-term successor.

The group also claimed that “some additional appointments” will be made alongside its new CEO.

In the meantime, Issa brothers Moshin and Zuber will work alongside the Asda team to continue the execution of its strategic vision.

The brothers said: “The Asda business has proven its resilience over the last eighteen months and has a strong platform in place for further innovation and growth.

“We have mutually agreed with Roger that now is the right time for him to step down from the business following a transition period under our ownership.”

They added: “We would like to thank Roger for his leadership and contribution during his time with the business, particularly during the last year.

“We have a great team of more than 140,000 colleagues at Asda, and we look forward to supporting all of them to deliver for our customers in the second half of the year.”
