Cornhill retail development adds Superdry and Waterstone stores

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Lincoln’s Cornhill Quarter, which is subject to a £70m redevelopment from Lincolnshire Co-op, has announced two additional high profile retail signings to the scheme.

A Superdry franchise store will be added to the ground floor of the Waterstones building, with the designer clothing brand Richard Goddard operating from the first floor.

The two signings will total 7,100 sq ft of retail space, with the overall project expected to span over 150,000 sq ft of mixed-use commercial floor space.

Ursula Lidbetter, chief executive at Lincolnshire Co-op, said: “We got feedback that people were keen to see more men’s fashion, so it’s great to welcome these superb new additions to The Cornhill Quarter line up.”

“We continue to progress our long-term vision to create a destination for residents and tourists alike, with a carefully considered mix of both big name brands and local retailers, helping to boost the city’s offering for the local community and attracting visitors from further afield.”

The development at Sincil Street and St Mary’s Street has already seen the completed renovation of the Corn Exchange Building in 2017, with works now underway on the fourth phase of construction.

Described as a “place that has been growing and positively evolving”, The Cornhill Quarter has attracted a number of high street retailers to the site, including Phase Eight, Hobbs, and Whistles.

In addition to the direct renovations of the area, £30m has been invested into surrounding transport infrastructure by the local council.
