On this episode of Talking Shop I am joined by Zipline CEO and co-founder Melissa Wong. We discuss how Melissa’s 10 years’ of frontline experience informed her approach to building a SaaS company, the recurring operational frustrations that most head offices still underestimate, and why she believes technology should be designed with the store associate as the primary user. We also explore current trends in store execution and how retailers can bridge the gap between corporate strategy and the shop floor.

Lidl has announced that it will pay all its UK colleagues a one-off £200 thank you payment for their “hard work and ongoing dedication during the pandemic”.

The supermarket will gift the payment to customer assistants, warehouse operatives and cleaners, across over 800 stores and 13 distribution centres.

Lidl, which has posted positive results during the pandemic also announced that it will give all office based colleagues a one-off £100 payment to recognise their efforts in supporting the business.

It follows a move by the discount retailer last November to increase the wages of all employees on hourly rates, with entry-level wages increasing from £9.30 to £9.50 per hour outside the M25 and £10.75 to £10.85 within the M25. A decision which will come into effect from March 2021.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB said: “Everyone in the food retail sector has been in the privileged position of being able to continue operating throughout this pandemic.

“However, it has been an extremely challenging period and our teams have done a phenomenal job in helping to keep the nation fed”

He added: “I am incredibly proud of the dedication and commitment our colleagues have shown and continue to show and this payment is about recognising their unrelenting hard work and thanking each individual for the important part they’ve played in the year like no other”.
