Dixons Carphone to axe 800 jobs

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Dixons Carphone is set to axe 800 management roles in a bid to restructure and streamline the company.

The Currys PC World owner confirmed it has now begun a consultation process with affected employees.

It comes as the group is looking to shake up its management structure. It now plans to remove the retail manager, assistant manager and team leader roles, as well as the role of business advisor in stores without a Business Hub.

In addition, it will introduce new sales manager, customer experience manager and operational excellence manager roles to its stores.

The group said the move would bring “clearer accountability” for store leaders who work as an integrated team across the stores’ electricals and mobile offerings.

Dixons Carphone chief operating officer Mark Allsop said: “We remain committed to our stores as part of an omnichannel future, where we offer the best of online and stores to our customers.

“As part of this, we want to empower our store leadership teams, create a flatter management structure and make it easy for our customers to shop with us, however they choose.

He added:”This proposal will ensure in-store roles are focused on giving a seamless customer experience and exceptional service across all our customer channels, whether online or in-store.”

“Sadly, this proposal means we have now entered into consultation with some of our store colleagues. This was not an easy decision and we’ll do everything possible to look after those colleagues we can’t find new roles for, financially and otherwise.”
