Fenwick to reopen all nine UK stores on 15 June

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Department store Fenwick revealed that all nine of its UK stores will reopen from Monday (15 June) as lockdown measures begin to ease.

Fenwick said in order to prepare for its reopening, each store has undergone “intensive” cleaning both front and back of house, with “extensive social distancing measures implemented”.

The department store chain has sites in Bond Street and Brent Cross in London, Canterbury, Bracknell, Colchester, Kingston, Newcastle, Tunbridge Wells and York.

As well as a deep clean, Fenwick has introduced hosts who will greet customers as they arrive and explain the new system in operation and there will also be “clear signage” throughout each store to guide and advise customers.

Restaurants, cafes, and beauty services remain closed as dictated by government guidance.

John Edgar, Fenwick CEO, said: “With the imminent re-opening of our shops, the safety of our colleagues and customers is our absolute priority and we have been working diligently in order to make our stores compliant with the guidelines, yet still give our customers a truly Fenwick experience.

“Premium department stores such as Fenwick are the best place to enjoy shopping in the current situation – as well as the strict safety measures we have put in place, we have ample space, an incredible selection of brands and products all under one roof and plenty of advisors providing excellent customer service.”

He added: “We are ready and prepared to open our physical stores on 15 June and we are very much looking forward to welcoming our customers then.”

In March, Fenwick announced the temporary closure of its online operations amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Fenwick closed all its retail stores across the UK in March after the prime minister urged all stores selling “non-essential” products to close to help prevent the spread of the virus.
