World’s largest Primark opens in Birmingham

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Primark has opened the biggest store in its worldwide portfolio, in Birmingham.

The new 161,000 square foot store will be spread across five floors and will feature a Disney cafe, two restaurants, a barber shop and a beauty studio. For the first time, the new Primark will feature a homeware department alongside its usual fashion offering.

Primark called its new store a chance to do something “special”, adding that it would offer “an enhanced shopping experience”, at the former site of the Pavilions Shopping Centre. The new store takes the accolade of largest store away from the retailer’s Manchester branch.

As many as 500 new jobs have been created, with 430 transferring from Primark’s old Birmingham site on the city’s New Street, which was four times smaller than the new store. Amid trouble on the high street, the fashion retailer is thought to have splashed out £70m on the new development.

Transport operator Network West Midlands was forced to put out a statement on Twitter ahead of today’s opening urging people not to travel to the store during rush hour, with Primark expecting as many as 5,000 visitors on its opening day.
