Microsoft to take on Amazon in checkout-free showdown

On this episode of Talking Shop I am joined by Zipline CEO and co-founder Melissa Wong. We discuss how Melissa’s 10 years’ of frontline experience informed her approach to building a SaaS company, the recurring operational frustrations that most head offices still underestimate, and why she believes technology should be designed with the store associate as the primary user. We also explore current trends in store execution and how retailers can bridge the gap between corporate strategy and the shop floor.

Microsoft is reportedly working on technology to cut out cashiers and checkout queues in shops in the first challenge to Amazon Go who opened their checkout-free store in Seattle in January.

Sources close to the development of the technology told media that Microsoft is developing software to track what shoppers place in their trolleys and baskets.

The tech giant has reportedly held talks with Walmart over a potential collaboration as it aims to help retailers keep up with Amazon rather than starting its own stores.

Amazon is soon to open two new stores in San Francisco and Chicago, the stores will use cameras and sensors to track what customers are taking and then customers check out through their smartphone.

Tests of other technology where customers scan and bag each item themselves have had mixed results with the camera and sensor method seemingly the most effective plan.
