David McCabe previously served as commercial manager for the UK and Ireland in 2019, and later held the position of country retail manager and chief sustainability officer for Czechia, Hungary and Slovakia for four years

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

Ikea has announced the appointment of David McCabe as its new country retail manager and chief sustainability officer for the UK and Ireland, effective 1 July.

McCabe, who is currently the global fulfilment and core services manager for Ingka Group, will replace Peter Jelkeby who recently moved to lead Ikea Germany

McCabe first joined the retailer in 1996 at the Ikea Lakeside store. His 30-year career includes leadership roles across North America and Europe in logistics, innovation and commercial management.

He previously served as commercial manager for the UK and Ireland in 2019. He later held the position of country retail manager and chief sustainability officer for Czechia, Hungary and Slovakia for four years.

The retailer has expanded its footprint since the start of 2025 with nine new locations. These include city centre stores on Oxford Street and in Brighton – as well as new plan and order points in Hull, Waterford, York and Dundee.

Ikea also opened three small-format stores in retail parks in Harlow, Norwich and Chester. From July, McCabe will lead the organisation as it attempts to grow its omni-channel business.

McCabe said: “It is a true honour to be rejoining the UK and Ireland team. So much has changed since I started my Ikea career three decades ago in the Lakeside store, but the constant has always been the fantastic people who bring our culture to life.

“I have been continually impressed by the team’s achievements. Now, together, we have a great opportunity to shape the future of Ikea in the UK and Ireland, as we continue to strengthen our focus on becoming even more accessible, affordable and sustainable for our customers.”
