Aldi to open five stores in 24 hours as part of UK expansion

On the final episode of season three we sit down with Claire Watkin, CEO of The Fine Bedding Company, a fourth-generation business founded in 1912. She shares how the brand has performed in recent years and what its proposition really stands for today. We explore balancing heritage with innovation, building sustainability into products and operations, and the journey to a zero-waste eco-factory in Estonia. Claire also unpacks earning consumer trust, making the investment case, and her advice to the next generation of leaders.

Aldi will open five new stores across England in 24 hours as part of its plan to reach 1,500 UK sites. The openings include branches in Uxbridge and Old Kent Road in London, Northallerton and Pershore on 11 December, followed by a new store in Yate, Bristol on 12 December.

The supermarket said the additions will bring around 200 jobs, describing the roles as offering its “market-leading” pay rates. Aldi is the only major grocer to provide paid breaks for store staff, which it values at about £1,475 a year for an average colleague.

Among the selling points the retailer highlighted were fresh British produce and its Specialbuy ranges. It said its prices remain the lowest in the UK, citing recent consumer research and industry awards.

The discounter said the rapid sequence of openings underlined its ambition to expand, noting a £650m investment in new stores and refurbishments scheduled for 2025, alongside a further £1.6bn committed over the following two years. The programme supports the rollout of about 40 new stores annually.

Jon Neale, real estate managing director at Aldi UK, said: “Opening any new store is exciting, but opening five in 24 hours, just before Christmas, will make a huge difference for customers in each of these areas. It reflects the demand we’re seeing right across the UK and the scale of our ambition as we continue to grow.

“We’re committed to growing in the right places, with the right teams, bringing our low prices and high-quality products to even more communities – and we’re committed to moving as fast as we can to deliver that.”

The new stores are located on Harefield Road in Uxbridge, Old Kent Road, North Moor Road in Northallerton and King Georges Way in Pershore, with the Yate branch on Link Road in Bristol opening the following day.
