On this episode of Talking Shop I am joined by Zipline CEO and co-founder Melissa Wong. We discuss how Melissa’s 10 years’ of frontline experience informed her approach to building a SaaS company, the recurring operational frustrations that most head offices still underestimate, and why she believes technology should be designed with the store associate as the primary user. We also explore current trends in store execution and how retailers can bridge the gap between corporate strategy and the shop floor.

John Lewis has announced the appointment of Vikki Kavanagh as chief commercial officer to run the retailer’s commercial function.

Kavanagh joins John Lewis from Yoox Net-A-Porter Group where she most recently served as managing director of both Net-A-Porter and Mr Porter.

Before her MD positions, Kavanagh previously held senior buying and merchandising roles at department stores including Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser and Fenwick.

She will join John Lewis in early April and will report to executive director Peter Ruis.

Ruis said: “Vikki’s extensive experience and proven leadership in the retail sector make her an invaluable addition to our team. Her strategic vision and commercial acumen will be instrumental as we continue to evolve and enhance our customer offering.”

Kavanagh added: “I’m incredibly excited and proud to be joining John Lewis, which is a brand I’ve admired for many years. John Lewis has a unique opportunity to redefine the UK omnichannel retail experience and I’m looking forward to working with the team to deliver an exceptional offer for our customers.”

The news comes as John Lewis commercial director Kathleen Mitchell has left the business after three years in the role.

Before joining the retailer, Mitchell was managing and brand director at Accessorize for three years. She also held various senior roles at Stella & Dot and L’Oréal.
