JD Sports has made the decision to close its distribution centre in Derby, meaning almost 200 jobs could be lost, according to reports first revealed by the BBC.The outlet said staff at Derby Commercial Park were informed of the decision on Friday (6 September) following a six-week consultation period.

It is understood the decision follows a strategic review of JD Group’s global supply chain network.

It is also understood JD Sports is now working on a process to see if there are alternative roles within the business for affected staff.

A spokesperson told Retail Sector: “We have made the difficult decision to close our Derby distribution centre and are working with all those affected to ensure they are fully supported through this challenging period.”

JD Sports signed a 20-year lease on the newly built 514,000 sq ft facility three years ago.

The warehouse had 56 dock doors and eight-level access doors, as well as parking for 185 trailers.
