Tesco introduces clear caps on milk bottles to improve recyclability

In this episode we speak to Matt Dalton, consumer sector leader at Forvis Mazars. Matt discussed the biggest challenges facing the retail sector, from cost pressures and wage increases to polarised property markets and geopolitical shocks, and the ways in which retailers can best navigate these. We also explore how short-term cost-cutting could undermine long-term resilience, and how retailers can best remain agile and adaptable in unforecastable times.

Tesco has today (23 August) announced the introduction of new clear caps for bottles of milk, in a bid to make it easier for customers to recycle.

By removing coloured plastic caps and using a clear alternative on around 425 million of bottles every year, Tesco is enabling the cap to be recycled back into milk bottles.

Currently, coloured plastic needs to be processed separately from clear packaging, and so this simple change means that each year over 3,900 tonnes extra tonnes of recycled plastic can be reused to make milk bottles.

The move will soon be rolled out in all Tesco stores, and across 4 pint, 2 pint and 1 pint bottles of milk.

James Waddy, category director for dairy, said: “Ensuring our packaging is as sustainable as possible is really important to us, and customer feedback on our trial of these new clear milk caps has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We will continue to look for ways to improve the packaging of our products, and make it even easier for customers to recycle at home.”
