Superdrug revealed that its like-for-like sales increased by 16% in December, with the group confirming that this Christmas trading period was the “strongest” so far.
The group has attributed its performance to consistently good footfall across the entire month, as average weekly transactions in shops were 19% higher than in the previous December.
In addition, the beauty retailer’s own brand lines experienced a 20% increase in sales, while more shoppers also took advantage of discounts and its loyalty cards.
At the same time, the group reported that customers also spent more on premium fragrances, which helped drive the category’s “biggest-ever” sales week in the run-up to Christmas.
The results for premium fragrances followed the group’s introduction of six new luxury brands in September, which included Prada, YSL, and Giorgio Armani.
During 2022, Superdrug opened 11 new stores in locations such as Aberdeen and Plymouth, while also refurbishing a further 59 of its sites.
Peter Macnab, CEO of Superdrug, said: ‘We are delighted to say that we had a tremendous Christmas at Superdrug. Our commitment to accessibility means that customers continue to come to us for the very best in high street value, at a time when affordability really matters.
“Our continued investment in stores, market-leading digital progression and innovation in ‘Own Brand’ has driven increased sales and market share growth. I’d like to thank all of my colleagues for all of their hard work in bringing such a fantastic and competitive offering to shoppers.”
