Mattress Online recognised as fast growing firm in tech awards

The Rotherham-based retailer shared plans to open 10 stores in the next five years after a turnover leap to £37.5m during the pandemic

Mattress Online, a leading UK online retailer of mattresses and beds, recently received two Northern Tech Awards, placing at 19th in the ‘Top 100 Fastest Growing Tech Companies in the North’ and 2nd in the ‘Top 15 Fastest Growing Larger Companies’.

The Rotherham-based retailer was reportedly the first online seller of mattresses when the company was first launched in 2003 as a “bespoke” e-commerce platform and last year, it had shared plans to open 10 brick-and-mortar stores over the next five years.

During the pandemic, Mattress Online saw turnover hit £37.5m, which the company attributed to “stay-at-home spending on DIY and homeware”. Growth was also underpinned by the in-house development team who “found smarter ways to use technology to make the customer experience slicker”.

Michael Jervis, head of digital, said: “Mattress Online’s ability to be ahead of the game during the pandemic meant that we could continue to provide the smartest technology available to manage the huge increase in sales.

“In 2021 we processed 128,500 orders from 3.1 million web visitors. This could have been overwhelming had it not been for the systems we have in place, so it is fantastic to have been recognised for our performance in the tech realm.”

He added: “Placing at 19th for Tech Growth, and 2nd amongst the larger companies is a real departure for Mattress Online as the tech-forward organisation that we’ve always known it to be.”

Steve Adams, chief executive officer, said: “Tech has always been at the very heart of what we do at Mattress Online. Harnessing that, and having some of the best digital talent in Yorkshire in our team, makes our placing in the lists really rewarding.

“That expansion plan is now well underway and is bolstered by a development team who are constantly improving our technology, both in terms of the customer facing platform and in streamlining internal processes. The future is looking positive, and I am, as ever, incredibly proud of my entire team.”
