L Brands adds JK Symancyk to board of directors

On this episode of Talking Shop I’m joined by Alain Bejjani—former Group CEO of Middle East retail giant Majid Al Futtaim, and author of the definitive new book, NEXT: Leading Through the New Realities. Drawing on his childhood in war-torn Beirut, and his experience steering a $9.5bn dollar retail and lifestyle empire through a global pandemic, Alain brings an unmatched perspective on leadership under pressure. Today, we break down his crisis survival playbook for retailers operating in distress. We discuss why resilience must always outpace efficiency, the four assets a brand must protect at all costs, and how to turn macro-turmoil into a long-term direction that scales.

L Brands, the owner of Bath and Body Works, Victoria’s Secret, and Pink, has announced the appointment of JK Symancyk as an independent member of its board of directors.

Effective 20 May 2021, Symancyk’s addition brings the board to 11 members, with 10 of these acting as independent directors.

Symancyk has served as president and CEO at PetSmart, as well as sitting on the group’s board of directors, since 2018.

He provides the role with 25 years of experience managing retail operations through positions at Academy Sports and Outdoors, Meijer, and Walmart Stores.

In addition, Symancyk acts as chairman of PetSmart Charities, while currently sitting on the board of directors at online pet food retailer Chewy.

Sarah Nash, chair of L Brands’ board, said: “We are pleased to welcome JK to the Board and look forward to benefiting from his deep retail and leadership expertise.

“JK has a proven track record of helping organizations drive profitable growth, while improving operational performance of large, multi-channel consumer businesses.”

She added that his appointment will support the firm in entering its “next chapter” and completing the “planned separation of Bath and Body Works and Victoria’s Secret”.
